Planning a family photography session can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. The tips below will help make planning your session and the actual session a little less stressful.
1. Wardrobe is important. Wardrobe really completely change the look and vibe of a session. Photographers often know what will look best in family portraits and the best places to shop. This is why I offer an initial consultation to my clients via Zoom and/or texting. I have lot of shop recommendations and styling tips in my Client Guide, however, my best tip is to contact me directly when shopping.
2. Location. I try to pick locations that allow movement and play. My emotive style of photography works best when there is room for families to play and just be themselves. Which brings me to my next point. We can work together to find a location that works both for my photography style and for your family.
3. Be you! I’m here to capture your family as it is – singing, dancing, exploring, swaying, nursing, cuddling, hugging, kissing, etc. Just doing what family’s do. Get ready to have fun. This also means letting the kids behavior go a bit. As a mother of four, I don’t expect your children to behave perfectly, nor do I even want them to. Let them explore. Let them get dirty. Snuggle them if they get upset. There is no need for any scolding of any kind during a session. No need to tell them to smile. No need to tell them to look at the camera. I will handle directions. Do your best to loosen dad up before the session. I’m not here to torture him! Let him know this session is about having fun and staying loose. The more genuine your interactions are, the better!
4. Come with a full belly. No one photographs well hungry, especially not men and children. Please be sure to get in a nice meal before your session (before getting dressed).
5. Practice hair & makeup. If you plan on trying any new hair styles or makeup, please practice at least one time before session day. There is nothing worse than being stressed before your session because your hair and/or makeup aren’t coming out like you envisioned.
